Dentures

If you have not yet had dentures fitted, you might wonder what the process entails. For instance, if you must have a dental extraction to get dentures, you may wonder how long you will have to wait before getting them. A dentist can only make temporary dentures until you can have your permanent ones made. It takes time for the tissue and gums to heal. In our office at , patients often inquire about dentures as a solution for their missing teeth. We have many options available and can answer any questions you may have.

How Long Does it Take to Heal?

The healing time for gums varies from patient to patient. It is also important to consider the type of denture a patient plans to get. It can take three to six months for gums to heal for a custom-made denture. It is during this time that gums will heal and that patients will meet with their dentist for fittings and adjustments. In this way, permanent dentures will be a perfect fit once the gums have healed. While the gums are healing, patients are usually given temporary dentures to wear.

Temporary Dentures

Many patients use temporary dentures soon after having their teeth extracted. Besides serving a cosmetic purpose, these dentures help preserve the integrity of the jawbone and the shape of the mouth during the healing process. A temporary denture plays a crucial role here. Extraction of teeth causes the surrounding jawbone to shrink. This is prevented by temporary dentures. However, temporary dentures must also be relined or refitted to ensure they fit properly until the permanent dentures are manufactured.

How Implants Affect the Process

The healing period between extraction and permanent dentures takes longer when implants are part of the denture procedure. Typically, patients must wait four to six months between extraction and getting permanent dentures. By doing so, titanium screws can be attached to the jawbone of a patient. Furthermore, permanent dentures must also be applied after the tissue around the implants has healed.

After a patient's gums have healed, they undergo a dental cleaning. The gums must be clean, or the dentures cannot attach to your natural teeth if there are any.
