Inlays & Onlays
Florence, AL

3D rendering of inlays and onlays offered at Singing River Dentistry in Florence, AL 35630-1747Damage to your teeth happens as a result of lifestyle choices, genetics, and trauma. This can be a painful experience, and we are happy to assist you through the process of assessment and prevention, as well as provide you with your options for repair. When the teeth are damaged, eating can become painful and result in decreased nutritional intake. Things like smoking, inadequate dental hygiene practices, and high intake of acidic foods can all contribute to damage requiring repair.

These damages are often referred to as cavities, and our staff at Singing River Dentistry are happy to speak with you regarding your options. In many cases, dental inlays and onlays may be a viable option. We are happy to discuss the differences, and occasions for use.

Which Method Will Be Used?

The manner in which the damaged tooth is repaired is dependent on the results of your physical exam. Our experienced practitioners will complete a dental exam, assessing the extent of any damage to the teeth. Inlays and onlays are traditionally used in the repair of molars and premolars. If the affected tooth is damaged beyond the cusp (the rounded biting edge), an onlay would be our preferred method of repair. If only the center of your tooth is in need of repair, our dental team will fit you for personalized inlays.

Is One Method Better?

Both inlays and outlays are made to fit your teeth. Our team of dentists will assess the trauma to the tooth. This will involve an injection of anesthesia to the area, and cleaning out of the decay, often with the use of a drill. Impressions are then taken of your tooth, and sent to a laboratory. The preferred repair method (either inlay or onlay) is then molded from either high strength composite resin or porcelain. These products may take up to a week to produce, and our dental team will ensure a personalized fit for you during your next appointment. In the case that an onlay is required, we will fit you for a temporary repair, in an effort to reduce pain and further damage to the tooth.

These methods will be employed by our dentists instead of fillings for cavities when the damage to the bite surface is extensive. This may include fractured or decayed teeth, in an instance that a filling would weaken the remaining structure, or if the injury to the tooth would not support a crown. Our skilled team of dental practitioners will work with you to formulate the best plan of care for your teeth.
