6 Tips for Pain Relief after a Broken Tooth

Posted on 6/2/2025 by Singing River Dentistry - Helton Drive
Female patient consulting with a dentist about severe tooth pain during an emergency dental appointment in a clinic.A broken tooth can be a painful and worrying experience. It's important to seek professional dental care as soon as possible, but in the meantime, there are some things you can do to relieve the pain and discomfort. Here are six tips to help you cope with a broken tooth until you can see your dentist:

1. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. This will help to clean the area around the broken tooth and reduce inflammation. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and rinse your mouth several times a day.

2. Apply a cold compress to the area. This will help to reduce swelling and pain. Wrap an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas in a towel and apply it to the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time.

3. Take over-the-counter pain medication. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help to relieve pain and inflammation. Follow the dosage instructions on the label.

4. Avoid using the broken tooth. This will help to prevent further damage and pain. If you need to chew, use the other side of your mouth.

5. See your dentist as soon as possible. A broken tooth is a serious dental problem that needs to be treated by a professional. Your dentist will be able to assess the damage and recommend the best course of treatment.

6. Practice good oral hygiene. This is important for preventing future dental problems. Brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and see your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.

Prevention Dentistry: Your Best Defense

While a broken tooth can be a painful experience, it's important to remember that it's preventable. By practicing good oral hygiene and seeing your dentist for regular checkups, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing a broken tooth.

Here are some additional tips for preventing broken teeth:

•  Wear a mouthguard when playing sports or engaging in other activities that could cause injury to your mouth.
•  Avoid chewing on hard objects, such as ice or candy.
•  Be careful when opening bottles or other objects with your teeth.
•  See your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.

By following these tips, you can help to keep your teeth healthy and strong and avoid the pain and inconvenience of a broken tooth.
