I Want To Travel Abroad. What Should I Know About Dental Care in Other Countries?

Posted on 7/1/2024 by Hunter Provance

While you may be tempted to jump on a plane or a ship and take a trip around the world, there are some things you need to know about dental care abroad. Here is some important information for any traveler.

Only 6 Percent of the World Has Fluoride in Drinking Water

You may have heard precautions about drinking water in certain areas of the world because of the risk of gastrointestinal diseases. However, there are other precautions you may want to take before you travel. The United States is one of the few areas of the world where municipal water has fluoride in it.

Fluoride is a mineral that is essential for remineralizing your tooth enamel and cavity-fighting. If you are traveling outside of North America, Western Europe, or Australia, you may want to double-check that the toothpaste you are taking on your trip has fluoride in it to compensate for the loss of fluoride in drinking water.

You May Not Find Your Toothpaste or Floss Where You Are Going

If you have never traveled abroad, you may not know that your brand of toothpaste may only be sold here in the United States. You may also not be able to find the brand of floss you use. If you are going to be traveling for a while, be sure to pack your dental supplies to take with you.

Be sure that if you are flying, your toothpaste is the right size and packed properly for going through security checks.

Take an Adapter

Families who love their electric flossers and toothbrushes may be out of luck if they travel out of the country because the electrical sockets are likely not configured the same way. The voltage may be different as well. Before you travel, double-check what kind of adapter you will need to travel with your favorite tooth-cleaning tools.
