Do I Need Mouth Guards?

One way to prevent costly damage to your beautiful teeth is to have mouth guards. Mouth guards protect your teeth from damage due to sports or clenching and grinding your teeth. Here are some of the people who might benefit from mouth guards.

Do You Play A Sport?

It is important to stay healthy and active throughout your lifetime. Many adults play a competitive sport well into adulthood. If you love to play flag football, volleyball, kickball, or baseball, for example, you may want to consider using a mouth guard to protect your teeth. Mouth guards are required in many adult sports leagues because over 20% of all sports injuries occur in the face or mouth region of the body. Even if you don't play a contact sport, such as tennis or golf, you may want to consider wearing a mouth guard in case an errant ball comes your way.

What about people who practice single-player sports, such as swimming, cross-country skiing, surfing, or rowing? If you have spent a lot of money making your smile perfect, wearing a mouth guard lowers the chances you'll need corrective surgery significantly.

Bruxism

If you wake up in the morning with sore jaws and a headache, there's a good chance you clench or grind your teeth at night. Bruxism is not unusual- around 30% of all adults clench or grind their teeth at night. Wearing a nightguard- a fitted mouth guard that prevents bruxism- means you are not only saving your teeth from damage, but you will have fewer headaches and jaw pain as well.

How Do I Get Mouth Guards?

The best way to get a mouth guard that fits properly is to visit a dentist. Dentists can take a mold of your teeth and use that mold to make a mouth guard or a nightguard. While mouth guards used to be expensive, technology has made them much cheaper to make and therefore more affordable.
